Filing the FAFSA

There’s money available to help pay for college, but you have to apply for financial aid! Being prepared – knowing the required forms and deadlines – is the best way to maximize your financial aid eligibility.

All students should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Some students, depending on the schools they are interested in attending, may also need to submit the CSS/Financial Aid Profile or another application.

How to File the FAFSA

The FAFSA is used by all schools to award federal and state financial aid. Many schools also use the FAFSA to award their institutional financial aid.

To file the FAFSA, visit FAFSA.gov.

The FAFSA becomes available on January 1 and students must file each year to be considered for financial aid. Most families can complete the FAFSA in less than 30 minutes.

Though many schools have priority filing deadlines, some types of aid (like Federal Pell Grants) may be available after those deadlines. File your FAFSA even if you’ve missed your school’s priority filing deadline.
