Each year at its annual Showcase Maine event, FAME recognizes individuals and organizations who have distinguished themselves through their commitment to advancing Maine’s economy and quality higher education. Through their efforts, these individuals and organizations help make Maine a better place in which to live, learn and work.

Business at Work for Maine Award
Roselyn North Academy
Roselyn North Academy was honored for its dedication to elevating early childhood education in Maine. The Academy’s owner, Angela Garrison, said, “I feel like I was put on this earth to provide safe spaces for children to learn and grow. I truly feel like that is my calling and that is why I was put here.” With eight early childhood and preschool locations across southern Maine, the Academy has 125 employees taking care of and teaching close to 450 students each day. The academy’s mission is to care for and nurture children, families, and educators in their communities. Angela said, “It’s very hard to start a brand new business, especially when you don’t really have experience in that field… We really find value in investing in each other and without FAME’s support and investing in Maine people, I just don’t think any of that would be possible.”

Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute’s (OSWLI)
Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute’s (OSWLI) was recognized for its impact on high school students, and for building coalitions across political and geographic lines to help young women realize their dreams. Executive Director Christina McAnuff said, “Research shows that girls lose confidence three and a half times faster than boys. It is critical that we stem the tide now. That’s what the program is designed to do.” OSWLI currently serves more than 620 students and is expected to increase that number to approximately 660 in the coming year. An alumna of the program, Tessa Solomon, said, “I have somebody to look up to. I have somebody that I can see myself in and that makes a huge difference.” OSWLI provides concrete outcomes including college credits, training, mentorship and development to girls from 38 schools across all 16 Maine counties and continues to explore ways to expand their impact.

Betsy Mayotte, President of The Institute of Student Loan Advisors (TISLA)
Betsy Mayotte, President of The Institute of Student Loan Advisors (TISLA), was honored for her commitment to empowering hundreds of Mainers every year to navigate a complex student loan system and gain the confidence needed to build resilient futures. Martha Johnston, FAME employee, said, “Betsy is very passionate about making sure people have access to the right information at the right time so they can manage their student loan repayment.” In the past year alone, over 600 Maine borrowers have registered for Betsy’s student loan webinars and TISLA counselors have provided important support to 1,200 Maine borrowers. The impact Betsy is having is especially important given federal student loan debt in Maine is over $6 billion. FAME has also directly benefited from “Betsy Briefs” updates that are critical to FAME’s success in supporting Maine borrowers. Betsy said, “I really wish more states understood the importance of providing a resource like FAME does for Maine residents.”

Partner at Work Award
Northern Maine Development Commission (NMDC)
The Partner at Work Award is a new award presented to NMDC in honor of its significant achievements in commercial lending, strategic partnerships, and economic development. Since 2020, NMDC has become a cornerstone of rural Maine’s economy. Over the last five years, NDMC has deployed nearly 1,000 loans totaling $46 million, with nearly one third of this capital leveraging FAME funding. Two businesses that have been positively impacted by NMDC are Brassica Property Management, LLC and J. W. Raye & Co., Inc. The businesses received a $305,000 SSBCI loan through FAME, and along with making repairs and replacing centuries-old equipment, the loan enabled Raye’s to retain 12 employees and will allow the company to add up to three new employees in the next two years. NMDC is also a valued partner of the Maine Funding Network, which is a platform that allows Maine businesses to connect to many resources and alternative funding solutions.

Camden National Bank
Camden National Bankwas honored for its valued partnership with FAME and its outstanding commitment to Maine people and businesses through innovative financial solutions and community engagement. Over the past year, in partnership with FAME, Camden National made 70 loans for more than $12 million, creating 109 jobs and retaining 472.

Lender at Work for Maine Award (up to $1.5 billion in assets)
Acadia Federal Credit Union
Acadia Federal Credit Union was recognized for its strategic partnership with FAME and its exemplary commitment to the well-being of Maine’s communities and businesses. In collaboration with FAME, Acadia made 19 loans for just under $5.5 million, creating nine jobs and retaining 74.

First National Bank
First National Bank was honored for its increased partnership with FAME and dedication to empowering Maine’s businesses through forward-thinking financial services. First National partnered with FAME to make 12 loans for more than $7.6 million, creating 68 new jobs and retaining 74.

Education at Work for Maine Award
Worthington Scholarship Foundation
Worthington Scholarship Foundation (WSF) was recognized for their extraordinary commitment to providing scholarships and support to Maine public high school graduates attending Maine colleges. Since its founding in 2010 by Beverly and Donald Worthington, WSF has awarded hundreds of scholarships to both two- and four-year college students from all of Maine’s counties. The Foundation has continuously sought to expand and grow in ways designed to support students and their success, including providing ongoing financial education for their recipients. The Foundation works closely with FAME to understand FAFSA filing and financial eligibility data for Maine students.

Standard Bio Carbon
Business at Work for Maine
Standard Biocarbon was honored this year for their innovative work delivering high-carbon biochar produced by state-of-the-art technology from clean, source-verified biomass harvested from the working forests of Maine. Located in Enfield, the company is a clean-tech startup producing biochar at industrial scale to supply demand in agriculture, remediation, composite materials and to generate carbon removal credits. The company has benefited from a FAME Direct Loan and a Grow Maine/SSBCI loan. The FAME/SSBCI loans were made in partnership with CEI and MTI. The company has also benefited from an MRDA loan.

Camden National Bank
Lender at Work for Maine Award: Over $1.5 Billion in Assets
Camden National Bank was honored again this year in the category of lenders with assets at or above $1.5 billion. Over the past year, Camden National Bank partnered with FAME on 55 loans totaling approx. $15 million. This helped to create 108 Maine jobs and retain an additional 611 jobs. In addition to being a top partner in stimulating economic development in Maine, Camden National Bank is actively committed to the communities in which it operates. Founded in 1875, the bank encourages employee volunteerism and makes various donations to local nonprofits.

Franklin Savings Bank
Lender at Work for Maine Award: Most Enhanced Partnership
Franklin Savings Bank was honored in the category of lenders with assets under $1.5 billion. This past year, Franklin Savings partnered with FAME on 10 loans totaling $4.5 million. This helped to create 9 Maine jobs and retain an additional 85 jobs. A community bank based in Farmington since 1868, Franklin Savings conducts business primarily in Western and Central Maine, with commercial services offered in Ellsworth. The bank’s mission is to remain a financially strong, independent community bank, dedicated to superior customer and community service. Through its FSB Community Development Foundation, the bank takes pride in its generous support of various causes in the community.

Norway Savings Bank
Lender at Work for Maine Award: Most Enhanced Partnership
Norway Savings Bank was honored this year for having greatly increased its partnership with FAME on various financing projects. Founded in 1866, Norway Savings is a leading mutual banking and financial services company headquartered in Norway. The bank has a strong commitment to personal, community, and financial values. They are proud to be a community bank known for their financial strength, exceptional customer experience, and contributions to local communities. This past year, FAME partnered with Norway Savings on 16 loans to Maine companies totaling approximately $6 million, an increase of $2 million compared to last year. This helped to create 56 Maine jobs and retain an additional 237 jobs.

Maine School Counselors
Education at Work for Maine Award
Maine’s School Counselors were recognized for their unwavering commitment to and extraordinary support of Maine students throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond; for building their confidence, helping them achieve their goals, and contributing
to their successes in both the classroom and in life. The award was presented to the Maine Counseling Association and the Maine School Counselor Association.

Maine students from across the state explain the important role school counselors play in their lives.
Springworks Farm
Business at Work for Maine Award
Springworks Farm was honored this year for their efforts to start and expand a unique aquaponics organic lettuce farm to produce a sustainable year-round food source, thereby creating jobs and benefitting Maine’s economy. FAME commercial loan insurance, in partnership with a loan by Farm Credit East, helped to finance the construction by Springworks of an additional greenhouse at its Lisbon farm and to provide working capital. The company also benefitted from a Thrive Maine (Round 2) award.

Camden National Bank
Lender at Work for Maine Award: Over $1.5 Billion in Assets
Camden National Bank was honored for the thirteenth time in the category of lenders with assets at or above $1.5 billion. Over the past year, Camden National Bank partnered with FAME on 59 loans totaling approximately $23 million. This helped to create 100 Maine jobs and retain an additional 386 jobs. In addition to being a top partner in stimulating economic development in Maine, Camden National Bank is actively committed to the communities in which it operates. Founded in 1875, the bank encourages employee volunteerism and makes donations to local nonprofits.

Evergreen Credit Union
Lender at Work for Maine Award: Up to $1.5 Billion in Assets
Evergreen Credit Union was recognized for the second year in a row in the category for lenders with assets less than $1.5 billion. Over the past year, FAME partnered with Evergreen Credit Union on 24 loans totaling approximately $8.5 million. This helped to create 43 Maine jobs and retain an additional 205 jobs. Like FAME and Camden National Bank, Evergreen has been named this year as one of the Best Places to Work in Maine. They are one of the largest credit unions in Maine, with $508 million in assets as of March 2023. Evergreen proudly serves individuals, families, and local businesses throughout southern Maine. They strive to benefit their neighbors and organizations by donating time and resources as well.

First National Bank
Lender at Work for Maine Award: Most Enhanced Partnership
First National Bank was honored this year for having greatly increased its partnership with FAME on various financing projects. This past year, FAME partnered with First National Bank (FNB) on 15 loans to Maine companies totaling approximately $9.3 million. This helped to create 54 Maine jobs and retain an additional 115 jobs. First National Bank invites customers to become part of their Dream First Community. Members who open a Spark, #E-Chieve, or Inspire checking account are automatically enrolled in the Bank Local, Buy Local, Give Local Dream First Community program. By doing so, members can support local businesses while helping tackle food insecurity here in Maine. Also, when members shop locally with their First National Bank VISA® Debit Card, FNB donates money to local food banks.
