The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), in partnership with the Maine Office of Securities and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is excited to announce Invest in ME Reads, a new statewide financial education program designed to support family financial education in Maine by sparking conversations about future goals, saving money, and the value of choice.
Children learn about money and making choices from adults, which makes families an important influence in helping children to learn valuable financial skills. Learning to make informed choices and preparing for goals like education after high school helps families create the foundation for future success.
Invest in ME Reads will also support Maine’s statewide goal to produce an educated and skilled workforce. For many Mainers, a lack of financial capability can be a significant barrier to pursuing education and training after high school, which in turn impacts an individual’s ability to seek employment and ultimately the strength of Maine’s economy. The program is set to launch in 2020, with the goal of expanding into a multiyear initiative.
During the month of March, FAME will be distributing copies of the children’s book Those Shoes, which includes themes of saving, giving, and delayed gratification, with special content to encourage families to participate. A parent guide, developed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and information about Maine’s Section 529 plan, NextGen 529™, will also be included in the book. A supply will be mailed to all elementary schools, and schools will be asked to share the resources with all of their second-grade students. FAME has also launched a new educational web page, InvestinMEReads.com, filled with fun activities for students and additional resources for adults.
The author of Those Shoes, Maribeth Boelts, will be participating in the statewide launch of the program. Schools will be invited to take part in the launch by joining a live webstream of a reading event hosted by FAME and the author. FAME is also planning to host a Facebook Live event designed for parents who are interested in learning more about family financial education. Event details will be shared with schools and posted on InvestinMEReads.com.
