Maine Health Professions Loan Forgiveness

Maine Health Professions Loan Program recipients with an initial loan made prior to January 1, 2011 may be granted loan forgiveness.

The rate of forgiveness is based on location and type of practice and/or population served. Maine Health Professions Loans, plus interest, must be repaid if a loan recipient is not an eligible physician or practices outside of Maine.

Maine Health Professions Loan Program Forgiveness Chart

For qualifying borrowers with an initial loan made prior to January 1, 2011:

Complete a Maine primary care residency, and practice primary care in a health professional shortage area or provide services to an underserved group. 50% forgiveness of original total loan amount for each full year of practice.
Complete a Maine primary care residency and practice primary care in Maine. 25% forgiveness of original total loan amount for each full year of practice.
Primary care physicians and general dentists practicing in a Maine health professional shortage area.25% forgiveness of original total loan amount or up to $7,500 for each full year of practice, whichever is greater.
Primary care physicians and general dentists practicing in Maine but not in a health professional shortage area. 12.5% forgiveness of original total loan amount or up to $3,750 for each full year of practice, whichever is greater.
Physician practicing in an underserved specialty in Maine.25% forgiveness of original total loan amount or up to $7,500 for each full year of practice, whichever is greater.
Physician providing services to an underserved group in Maine.25% forgiveness of original total loan amount or up to $7,500 for each full year of practice, whichever is greater.
Veterinarians providing services to Maine residents with insufficient veterinary services.25% forgiveness of original total loan amount or up to $7,500 for each full year of practice, whichever is greater.
Non-eligible practice in Maine. No forgiveness. 10-year repayment period with interest accruing.
Out-of-state practice. No forgiveness. 10-year repayment period with interest accruing.

Borrowers who obtained their first loan after January 1, 2011 are subject to different provisions.
