UPDATE 03/31/2017: According to a recent statement from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Federal Student Aid (FSA), the FAFSA’s IRS Data Retrieval Tool may not be back online until the next FAFSA filing season. Students and/or families needing assistance with the FAFSA should contact FAME.
The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is currently experiencing an outage which is now expected to last for “several weeks.”
Current or potential FAFSA filers need to know the following:
- Students who have filed the FAFSA and used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool will not be impacted by the outage.
- Students who have NOT filed the FAFSA can still complete the FAFSA. Students should complete the FAFSA and enter tax information manually from a copy of their tax return. If students do not have access to 2015 tax information, an official transcript can be obtained at IRS.gov.
- Students who have already filed the FAFSA, but who have been selected for verification, will not be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to verify 2015 tax information. Instead, these students should obtain an official tax transcript from IRS.gov as soon as possible to submit a copy to their school.
FAME will continue to monitor this situation.
