State of Maine Financial Aid Programs

The 2008-2009 eligibility requirements for:

State of Maine Grant Program
A need-based grant program for Maine residents.
Educators for Maine Program
A merit-based forgivable loan program that provides assistance to students pursuing a career in teaching, speech pathology and child care.
Quality Child Care Education Scholarship
The Quality Child Care Education Scholarship Program is a need-based scholarship for postsecondary early childhood education or child development study for current and future child care professionals. Beginning with the 2008-2009 application year (Fall 2008, Spring 2009 and Summer 2009), FAME has entered into an agreement with the Maine schools that have historically enrolled students eligible for this program. As a result, please carefully review the following information to determine if you are eligible for this program and how to apply based on your status.
Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship
A merit-based, highly competitive, federally funded, renewable scholarship for graduating high school seniors.
Brunswick Naval Air Station Scholarship A scholarship program for primary, regular and year-round employees of the Brunswick Naval Air Station who are losing their jobs because of the base closure.
Maine Access to Medical Education
A program that provides twenty preferred access seats to Maine residents at three participating medical schools and one seat at a veterinary school.
Maine Dental Education Loan
A loan for Maine residents to fund their dental education that has forgiveness provisions for return service in Maine.
Maine Dental Loan Repayment
A program that allows dentists to enter into an agreement with FAME for the repayment of their dental education loans in exchange for service in Maine.
Maine Health Professions Loan Program
A need-based loan for Maine students pursuing a postgraduate education to become a physician, dentist, optometrist or veterinarian.
Tuition Waiver Program
A program that provides free tuition to certain foster children, and adopted children/wards under subsidy from the Department of Health and Human Services, and children of firefighters, law enforcement officers or emergency medical services persons killed in the line of duty, who attend a Maine public college or university and meet other specific criteria.

Award Amount $500 per course, maximum 2 courses per semester and a maximum $2,000 per student per year

Application

Applications are available on the FAME Web site. Click here to view application. Participating medical schools will send medical access application packets to Maine students.  

Deadline November 1 of the year prior to beginning medical school.  May 30 for Access to Veterinary Education.
Eligibility
  • Maine resident
  • Must submit the FAFSA
  • Must be accepted at a participating medical or veterinary school
Award Amount None to medical students.  A seat fee is paid directly to the school.  This has no impact on the student’s financial aid award. Exception: Veterinary students receive a $12,000 loan.

Notes
  • Medical students are required to complete two (4-week) primary care rotations in the State of Maine – one at a primary care residency program with not less than 50% outpatient care and one at a health professional shortage area or an ambulatory care site in rural Maine.
  • Veterinary students must complete clinical education in an area of the State with insufficient veterinary services relating to large animals.

  • Must be eligible for licensure to practice dental medicine in Maine
  • Must have qualifying outstanding education loans, including loans for dental education
  • Must have received an offer to practice at an eligible public or private dental care facility in an under served population area, or must provide written intent to establish a facility in an under served population area
  • Must accept patients regardless of ability to pay and must not limit service to any individual based on payment source
  • Must not be currently practicing under a contract with the National Health Service Corps
Award Amount $20,000 per year; $80,000 aggregate

  • Maine resident
  • Student must meet one of the following three conditions:
    • Student is a child or spouse of a firefighter, law enforcement officer or emergency medical services person killed in the line of duty.
    • Student was a foster child under the custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services when graduated from high school or equivalent.
    • Student is an adopted person or minor ward of a permanency guardian whose adoptive parent or guardian receives a subsidy from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.
Award Amount None to student, tuition is waived by the institution
